Jean was born in September 1915. In the early 1960s Jean was regularly found in the children’s section of Edinburgh Library, where she was continually scrutinising recently published children’s books in order to keep abreast of how illustration of children’s books was developing. She did have some of her illustrative work published, including a booklet titled “Children’s Communion Book – Scottish Liturgy 1982” published by St Mary’s Cathedral, Edinburgh. Jean was learning to handle a bell in St Mary’s in 1959 or 1960 when she would have been around 45 years old. She rang regularly at St Mary’s for quite a number of years. Jean was also a member of the handbell tune-ringing band which Kate Branson used to take around hospitals and old people’s homes in Edinburgh at Christmas time.
