We will work on both Stedman Cinques and Cambridge Surprise Maximus. You can choose to focus on either or both of these. The priority is to develop and consolidate 12-bell ability.

This will be achieved by means of extensive practical sessions and some simple “things to watch out for” advice, especially the way that course and after bells can be extremely helpful signposts.

Prior 10- or 12-bell experience is not essential: the purpose is to help you to step up to the next level by providing a strong support team and ample practice. But you must in advance be confident with Stedman Triples, or Cambridge or Yorkshire Surprise Major, as relevant to your choice of focus method.

Depending on level of interest, the current thinking is we will work on Stedman in the morning, followed by a quarter attempt; then Cambridge in the afternoon, followed by a quarter attempt. We will aim to get everyone through a quarter-peal by the end of the day, and there will be a chance for some to participate in a peal on the Sunday morning.

You must before you arrive have learnt the blue-line for the method(s) and the effect of bobs and singles, and for Cambridge the place-bell order. Stedman on higher numbers is apparently straightforward as a line but is demanding on listening and ropesight skills (which is why it is a good choice to practice).

The practice will focus on the methods from Simon Linford's "Project Pickled Egg" articles in the Ringing World. These are London, Bristol, Cambridge, Yorkshire and Superlative from the old "Standard Eight", together with Cornwall and Lessness.
